Mounting of Spherical Roller Bearings
Clean all shaft surfaces and dress any burrs with a file and a fine grade sandpaper. Remove any dirt or contaminants using a clean cloth. Apply a light coat of oil to the prepared surfaces Check that the shaft size conforms to ISO h9 / ITS tolerances. Unwrap the Spherical roller bearing only enough to measure the radial internal clearance. With the Spherical roller bearing on a work bench, rotate the Spherical roller bearing inner ring to seat the rollers. Check the radial internal clearance using a feeler gauge. This is done at the top of the Spherical roller bearing between the outer ring raceway and the top of the rollers. Remove the locknut and lock washer from the sleeve. Smear the shaft and outside diameter of the sleeve with light viscosity oil. Open the adapter sleeve slightly by inserting and twisting a flat screwdriver into the slit and position the sleeve on the shaft. Ensure that the screwdriver has not damaged the adapter sleeve. Dress accordingly. Apply anti-scuff paste or similar lubricant between the locknut face and lock washer. Pack the Spherical roller bearing with grease (if to be grease lubricated). Slide the Spherical roller bearing and lock washer onto the sleeve and hand tighten the locknut until all play is removed. This is the starting point from where the clearance will be removed. It is preferred where possible, that the lock nut drive directly against the Spherical roller bearing until the final clearance is achieved. The nut is then removed, and the tab washer is then fitted between the bearing face and lock nut. Further tighten the locknut using a C spanner whilst continuously checking the remaining radial internal clearance. When the Spherical roller bearing is mounted on the shaft, the clearance should be checked at the bottom of the Spherical roller bearing, between the outer ring raceway underneath the rollers. The nut should be tightened until the clearance has been reduced by the amount shown in Table Once this clearance is obtained, check to see if a tab on the lock washer aligns with one of the available slots on the locknut. If so, bend that tab into the slot. If no tabs line up with a slot, tighten the locknut until the nearest tab lines up. NEVER back off the nut to align a tab with the slot. Check that the Spherical roller bearing rotates freely without any binding.
